PRESS RELEASE

Mlada Slovenija – Instead of leading Serbia towards the European Union and the year 2025, Aleksandar Vučić is reverting to the Slobodan Milošević era

Ljubljana, 6 February 2025 – Mlada Slovenija – the youth organisation of Nova Slovenija – expresses its support for the student protests in Serbia. The protests started in response to the November collapse of the train station canopy in Novi Sad, which buried 15 people. This tragic accident has shown once again how deep run the tentacles of the Serbian Progressive Party and corruption in Serbia.

The students’ demands for greater transparency and respect for fundamental democratic principles are legitimate and deserve to be supported. It is necessary that all those responsible for the accident in Novi Sad as well as those who have physically attacked protesters in recent months, are brought to justice immediately. We support the demands for the strengthening of institutions to improve the rule of law and for the democratisation of Serbia. Furthermore, we expect that the protesters will be clearly supported by the European Union, which prides itself on having respect for human rights, democracy, and the rule of law among its core values.

Unfortunately, instead of leading Serbia towards the European Union and the year 2025, Aleksandar Vučić is reverting to the Slobodan Milošević era. We also condemn the rhetoric of President Vučić who describes the protesters as foreign mercenaries, even though the students have repeatedly proven that they are not affiliated with any opposition party. We are also critical of the letter from Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Janković backing up President Vučić.

We strongly support the efforts of young people in Serbia to get their country back on the path of rapprochement with the European Union and respect for the democratic principles of the rule of law. We want more perspectives and opportunities for Serbian youth – so that their future and employment will be determined by their professionalism, not their party affiliation.
